Frequently Asked Questions.

Is the plunge safe?

Absolutely! Is it smart? Ummm probably not…. haha but people have been doing this for centuries. Every year tens of thousands of people just like you do polar plunges in order to raise money for great causes. So you will be in good hands. Plus, we will have the amazing North Kingstown fire department coming and watch and be on hand in case of an emergency.

What is it rains?

Great question! We will most likely still have the event if it rains since we do have an indoor facility. Check back to the website for any changes to the event.

Who is the organization putting on this event?

The group putting on this Plunge is called Sojourn. We are a group of college students around RI that believe in living in community, seeking justice, and exploring faith. We consist of students of all walks of life. Some are religious while others have never stepped foot in a church, but we all believe life is better together as we try to make sense of the world around us. If you are interested in what we do check out our website here.

What should I wear?

Definitely wear warm clothes to the beach. It will be cold out. Just make sure you wear your bathing suit underneath so you don’t have to change once you get here. In the water you can wear whatever you want… though we do recommend sandals with straps or old shoes. Your feet will be so cold you probably won’t be cautious as you are sprinting out!

There are changing rooms there in order to change after the plunge so you can stick around and enjoy the games!

Who should I make the check out to?

You can make the check out to Sojourn. We will then write one big check to INH after the plunge. Remember, 100% of the donations goes to International Network of Hearts . You can give at the event or online on the donate page. Sojourn is a non-profit 50c3 organization and so your donation will be tax deductible if you give by check or online.

What if jumping into freezing, cold water isn’t my thing?

We understand that this is not for everyone, but the main reason we do this is to help a great cause. The only thing better than not plunging is watching other crazy people do it. So come watch and donate some money for a great charity. There will be lots of games, food, and prizes so come and enjoy. And bring lots of friends!!!

How does this event actually raise money?

There are a lot of different ways to raise money. The easiest is simply coming and giving a donation. We encourage 20 dollars because it gets you a free T-shirt, and the more money we raise the more that can go to INH. Other ways include asking your friends to donate for you to do this. You would be surprised how many students would give money to watch a friend do something as stupid and exciting as this. Getting 5 bucks from 20 people could put you in the lead for raising the most money. Check out our resources to help you raise the most money you can. You can also give online on the donate page.

What should I bring?

Definitely bring a change of clothes because you will want to stick around for the party after you jump in. We will have a raffle, giving out lots of prizes, giving awards for best costume, and of course having amazing food! Bring a towel to dry off and whatever else you need to keep yourself warm. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR REGISTRATION FORM, WAIVER FORM, AND YOUR DONATION. We will have extra forms there but it may be easier and faster if you print it off and bring it with you.

Are there bathrooms in order to change clothes before or after the plunge?

Absolutely! The Cold Spring Community Center is a big place with great facilities.

What does the schedule of the day look like?

Glad you asked. This is so much more than just jumping in the water. We are trying to make this an event for everyone. Between 11:30am and noon there will be registration as well as fun games to play, fire pits outside, and coffee. Around 12:15pm we will have a welcome/instructions and then we plunge! Afterwards, we will enjoy a Rhode Island staple… Iggy’s hot clam “chowda,” doughboys, and clam cakes. Also there will be a great band, a raffle for prizes and oh so much more.
